Last weekend I met with fellow members of the 45 Degrees Mountaineering Club for a weekend at the Coruisk Memorial Hut in Skye. This was to be my first experience of walking in the Cuillin, although I have been to Skye many times in the past. I was a wee bit nervous, knowing the nature of the mountains here are completely different to anything else in the UK with their steep, spiky rock peaks. I was aware of things like scree chutes, rock chimneys, sticky gabbro, hard scrambling and knife-edge exposure. And as I knew it would be, my first visit was pretty much a baptism of fire.
